My Not So Ordinary Christmas Tree

A few years ago I got fed up with the traditional green, Christmas tree.  The putting it together, stringing lights, taking it down was just wearing thin on me. And I never had a lot of help. Sure the family would show up to hang an ornament or two and then they were off to do other things.

So I decided that, for a few years anyway, I would have some non traditional trees, to make things interesting and different and hopefully easier.  I've even got a pin board on pinterest of nothing but unusual Christmas tree ideas.

The last 2 years I've put up an aluminum tree. These old trees are a snap to put up, and you don't string lights, just hang ornaments.

That was fun for a couple of years, but I was ready for something new,
something really different!

... so I made this

And now it looks like this

I'm really happy with it and it was fun to add the ornaments. You could screw in I hooks in the spindles, but I just tied string on the spindles and hung the ornaments from the string.
It's not real big, maybe 2 1/2-3 feet. I have it sitting on a high bistro table.

Fredericksburg tour continued... Main Drag...Shop Spotlight ...Red

Fredericksburg is a fabulous little Texas Town with German Roots. The main drag is lined with great locally owned stores with charm and character. Lots of antiques, home decor, and Oh the Food!!!!!!
This store called to me and is at one end of the main strip

Sorry for the bad photos, taken with my iphone
You can see why I was attracted to it. Mostly new and reproduction items, there are a few authentic pieces in here and some repurposes as well. I loved this antler tree.

The display pieces caught my eye and I was drooling over this old bolt display

Cardboard Wildlife for your Man Cave

I loved this red display piece filled with vintage Christmas

And this wreath definitely inspired me.

Much of their furniture had a mid century feel, which I enjoyed.
Oh La La!!!!!!
When in Fredericksburg be sure to stop into Red, for some eye candy

Honor A Veteran Today, Their Sacrafice is Great

Partial Reprint of my Memorial Day Post

Two years ago I heard a story of a local Marine who had been killed in Afghanistan.  "How sad" I thought, "that poor family". Then, I'm sorry to say, the story left my mind for other things.

Just over a year ago my son met a girl, she became his wife In April.  That Marine was her Brother.

I have, in the last year, gotten to know her family, and her brother through them.
I have seen, first hand, the sacrifice of our Soldiers, Veterans And Their Families.

Honor A Veteran Today

Continuing our Johnson City Tour

As we drove through Johnson City I spied this wonderful store, Unfortunately it was not open. I snapped a few photos as well as the phone number on the door, to see if we could pop in for a visit on our way back.
You can see why I was intrigued. The outside yard was full of delicious goodies.
On Sunday I gave the number a call and the owner and I agreed to meet up as we were heading back through Johnson City on our way home.
I was so glad to get a look INSIDE
Kathy Johnson, the owner was so fun to visit with. I always love picking the brains of fellow junkers.
Lots of architectural goodies at every turn.
I picked up a few small items as well as a t-shirt, and a new friend.

After Johnson City we headed to Fredericksburg and I'll write more about that next.

Road Trip Johnson City Texas

On our recent road trip to Fredericksburg Texas, we happened through a town called Johnson City.  This building and it's ornaments immediately grabbed my attention

Apparently it is some sort of an old feed mill.
Love the armadillo on the top of the building.

It was these on the sides of the, now closed, restaurant that I was drooling over.

I love old grain scoop, and there are soooo many, Not to mention the lovely iron wheels.
I found a great shop in Jackson, which will be my next post. For now hop over to the Flea Market Style blog ,  to read about a great shop I visited in Fredericksburg.
