Fun Weekend

My Mother's Birthday was last week, so I had made plans to take her out to dinner on Friday evening. Mom lives in Ft Worth, so as usual with my trips to the Metroplex, I planned a few other stops on the way. One of my first stops was a local Garage sale where I picked up these beauties.

They will be going on ebay this evening. After that I was off to Dallas, via Forney and stopped at one of my favorite places EastFork Antique Mall. If you have a few hours to kill you might want to stop by this place, but give yourself plenty of time. Something I did not have. I did pick up a few fun things though. The next stop was in N Dallas at May Flowers and Gifts to pick up some more candelabras from Kevin May.

2 of these

& 25 of these singles

Then to Mother's for Dinner. We had a good visit and then I was off to my Friend Penny's house for the night. She was not going to be home till late, so I decided to kill time and surprise an old friend from High School, that I've not seen in a few years. Angie and I had a nice visit and from there I went to Penny's where we stayed up till midnight chatting. The next day we had a nice breakfast, and headed out to a local Antique store. But before that I had her follow an estate sale sign. I told her "it would be an adventure". She found a few things, and I found a few things, but the best part was that a lady started playing old hymns on the piano that was for sale. And the sound of old church music filled the whole house. Penny is a musician and just loved this little treat. After that we hit the antique mall, I found nothing there, but Penny found some jewelry and we got to see Santa Clause. No really, he has a booth there and we had a chat with him. If you are ever in Canton in the Civic center he and his wife have a jewelry booth there, so stop by and say hi to Santa. Here are a few of my other finds.

This entire bunch of old aluminum tree branches. Of course they are for Christmas, but I'm also thinking about using them for the 4th of July, They are available for 2.50 ea

I think this will make a unique shelf for a plant

I'm going to make a towel holder out of this old door pull

If you are interested in the shoe stretchers they are $1 ea

This is also available for purchase $10.00

I was flipping through Martha Stewart magazine at Penny's house and found this great project with crates. I'll be doing something like this for my booth soon.

Speaking of Booths. I fell in love with this dealers displays when I was visiting a mall in Colleyville. Her stuff had a Definite garden theme, and most of it wasn't old, but I love her displays. I want to build this potting bench. It's a galvanized top table with a garden gate attached behind, and a tapered basket attached to the gate. It wouldn't be hard to put together if I had all the pieces.

Does anyone know where I can find these plant marker signs. They are chalk boards, mounted in a metal frame. She had 2 and they had no prices on them. I'd love to have a few.

Have a great Monday

My 3 Current Favorite Books

I love junking and decorating books. I love to look at the same ones again and again and again. Each time discovering something new with new eyes. Every night, my routine includes, looking through at least one of my decorating books or magazines, before I close my eyes. I keep post-its next to my reading places, so I can mark pages, and paper so I can jot down ideas. This year, I'm allowing myself 1 new junking book per month. I have 3 current favorites that I want to share with you.

First I'll talk about the "New French Decor". This is not a cheap book, but if you are ready for a splurge, pick it up. It's full of great ideas and wonderful pictures of soft, creamy junk and found objects to inspire your creativity. The displays are cluttered, and mostly in the shades of cream and white. There is a whole section for outdoor displays and it's 271 pages, with a smile on each page. You can see more pictures from this book here.

Next is "Modern Country", I've talked about this book on my web site before and after 2 months it's still one of my favs. It also ascribes to the "can't have too many things on one table" philosophy, but the displays incorporate more color than the previous book. It's the country decorating we all know, placed in in a shaker with a little modern, industrial and cottage, and shaken all together with some wonderful results.

Lastly is my newest book, called" Recycled Home". I'm usually wary about purchasing a book sight unseen, but I stepped out of my comfort zone on this one. It is a minimalist approach to Junk Decorating. The authors are English and have a store and home in England where most of the photos were taken. Lots of whites and creams in this book as well. And lots and lots of re-purposing. Most of the walls and backdrops are left industrial and chippy and most of the decor is found objects, which make this book right up my alley. It leans more to the industrial side of junk decorating than cottage and definitely not prim. The Authors also have another book "Restoration Home" Which I have been informed is the
exact same book, page per page.

You can read more about these books by clicking the links below. And let me say that if you click these links, and then buy something from amazon.com, it helps to support my web efforts. I'm not asking you to buy anything, but just so you'll know, that if you do, I get a little something to keep it all going. The French Decor book has a different cover from mine, but he ISBN number is the same.

Next Garage Sale
will start sometime Saturday Afternoon. I'll be out of town Friday and I'll return Saturday. I'll get the pictures up as soon as I can after I return.

Taxes, Facebook and a Project

Taxes
Yuck, I'm busy working on taxes. I'm a bookkeeper by trade "the real job", so all my ducks are in a row. But I still hate filling out the "organizer" for the CPA. She makes it really easy, just fill in a number on this line and that line. But I have to go and find those numbers. I've put if off about as long as I can, and tonight was my "tax" night. I'll finish it up tomorrow at work for the business stuff, and then off to the CPA by Friday. Yea, something off my list. I encourage all of you to really look at your taxes and pay attention to that line that tells you how much you have paid in throughout the year. Most people's taxes are taken out through payroll deductions and they really don't pay attention, especially if they are getting a refund.
But I encourage you to look this year, digest that number, and think about what it really means.

Facebook

I want to say a little something about my facebook account. I've decided that I want to keep my junking life and my personal life separate. I'm planning on reserving my facebook account for Family and personal friends, not related to junking. So if you send me a friend request for facebook I will probably not approve it. Please don't take this personally, I'm just trying to keep that for making contact with other people in my life, you know "the inner circle of loved ones". The other thing is that I have made the decision not to get political on this blog (except for the taxes statement above ;) , however, I may on my facebook, make my political or religious feelings known. My friends and family can handle that, afterall, they know me. So please don't feel disrespected if I don't approve you as a Facebook Friend. You are all my friends here.

Now for my weekend project:

I was inspired by Margaret's collages to try one of my own, and here it is.

I'm not a papercraft person, but this project was so much fun. I encourage you to try one. Gather up your bits and pieces and create away.
Basic ingredients
Old Frame
Wood or foam core board for the backing
old magazine, book, music, pretty floral paper
misc junk
Decopage medium, and various glues

Have fun, show your creations

Meet Jo and Liz

DH and I headed out to the Hunt County Trade Center, Hwy. 751, in Quinlin Texas on Sunday.
I had heard about this place from both Mindy and Teresa. There are 2 booths there I'd like to share with you. First is Joe Harmon in booths 18 &19, You can see more pics of Jo's place on Teresa's blog here.

Her place was stacked to the rafters with great stuff

And her displays were awesome

Here's my haul

And on my way to Liz's place, I had to stop and pet this cute little bloodhound puppy

After that DH, who was ahead of me quite a bit, said he had found another place that I'd like. This was Liz's Cotton Pickin' Antiques, which is just as you enter on the left section of buildings, right side of the left section. I got a plant stand and some bed springs from her. She had great stuff too, and "Warrenton" folks had just about bought her out. If you live anywhere near this place, you must stop by some weekend. They are open every weekend. Tell 'em, that Margo Sent ya.
Tomorrow, A project

More of my weekend finds

This is what I call a great junkin weekend. After going to Canton on Thursday, I headed to Hunt County Trade Center and found more goodies. I'll share those with you tomorrow. For now I want to show you some more of my Canton finds, and where some of them found a home.

That cute desk, cleaned up nicely and is now a side table.

That hose repair storage box is now in my work area

storing and displaying all kinds of treasures

The items below are headed for my booth

And here is a new fascination of mine. I've been finding lamp tops all over the place. The 2 on the top are lamp tops, the larger one is a metal finial that I picked up at the Veranda. Then someone gave me a box-o-junk and it had another lantern top on it that I haven't put out yet. I just like their shapes, as garden junk.

Weekend Blog Garage sales are going great, so look for more stuff next week. And anything without a sold or sale pending notice is still available.
And tune in tomorrow for pictures from the Hunt County Trades Days.
Have a great week, Margo
