"Shopping with Junkers Etiquette"

My first experience shopping with a group of like minded junkers, was when I went with the Red Shed Girls to my first Junk Bonanza.

That is when I learned the "Shopping with Junkers Etiquette".

It works like this... you are browsing in the same area, your friend at one end you at the other. You focus in on some small thing, while your friend, was not so distracted, and scanned the entire booth, zoning in on that special treasure that you just covet.

They pick it up, look it over, You see it for the first time and they mention how cool it is. Meanwhile you are staying calm, not letting on that you absolutely must have it. "That is cool!" you say and you wait... If you let on how much you like it, that will only make them like it more, but if you stay cool, they can decide for themselves how much they want it. Be patient, they might just put it down.

Etiquette dictates that it is theirs until they release it, then a nice junker will ask "so you are not going to get it?" If the other junker says, "no" then feel free to scoop it up. I usually ad a "are you sure?" just so no feelings are bruised.

To say that junking with junkers can be fun AND frustrating, is a bit of an understatement. More than once I've been so frustrated that I've not seen an item first, and there is simply nothing I can do about it. Friendship is more important than that piece of junk, and there is always another time, and invariably the shoe will be on the other foot when you spy that great piece first before your friend.

I usually shop flea markets alone, so it's not often a problem. But lately I've found myself, on several occasions, shopping with like-minded ladies and it's so important to preserve those friendships, and shopping with ladies who "get it" is so much fun!!!!.

You never know, the other junker might see that you really loved something, and gift it to you later :)

It's happened to me!!!!

How about you, any tips on shopping with junkers???

Love this post, you say what we are all thinking! People over junk is right, there's always another pile of junk, but not always another friend! ( especially one you can sweat with!, Ha!)

When you put it down, it is fair game, but no item is worth a friendship - you are right. What fun, junque-ing with a bunch of friends!!

Yep...shopping alone is best for getting the treasures you want, but not as much fun as the laughs shared and memories made when you shop with a junkin' buddy...what a dilemma!

Hi Margo,
I usually shop alone so I haven't run into this problem. My mom and I go to a flea market together but she has no interest in what I like so there is family harmony :)
Hope you're having a great week.

I go "garage saling" with a like minded friend sometimes...hitting like town wide sales. I will, about 75% of the time, let her get out and get to the sale first. Not hard as I always have my little girls to tend to...but then I go the opposite direction she goes. I know I don't ever want some object to ever make me greedy or upset. It keeps me humble and honestly I find what is meant for me.

Great post! My sister will say, "this is cool" so I have to first ask "are you talking for you or for me?" Just so we get it straight! And my best junking buddy here has started liking my kinda junk, what's with that?! Ha!!
