I used to be a Quilter

I was so inspired by the photo's of Ki's bedroom (pg 129), in the newest issue of Flea Market Style magazine, that I decided to give my existing bed coverings a pop of color. So off I went to Walmart for some pillowcases and a fun apple green coverlet from Kohls. Walmart has some fabulous colors in linens right now :) Once I got it all put together I decided to dig through my old quilts for just the right one. I knew which one I was going for...

Once upon a time I was a quilter. It was a hobby I picked up when my youngest was a toddler, and was a great way to spend time with friends and do something both productive, and self esteem building.
I vividly remember a friend and I, laying out our squares all over her floor, deciding how to piece them, with our 2 yr old boys running across them like it was the funnest game :)

This is the last quilt I made, It's a sampler, but unlike most samplers, each square is a different size. I chose to try patterns both old and new to me and I even decided to use some quality fabrics and not be such a penny pincher. It was fun to put together... but my excitement for quilting was beginning to wane during this period. I had the top pieced and the layers layered, but I was beginning to wonder if I'd ever get it all quilted. But when Mr. R and I had to travel to California for some surgery for him, it was the perfect thing for me to take with me to work on.

Just like the quilt squares being all different I decide to quilt each one of them differently based on the designs. From the back you can see the variations. It was a great time spender while Mr R recovered .

Since then, I've put my quilting thimble away and have been focusing on Junk, but bringing out this fun Fall colored Sampler was such a reminder of days past, that I decided to share it with you.

You can see more from my quilting days (1990's) by going here. I haven't updated the page in awhile and some of the photo's have been deleted, but you'll get the idea. So many memories of times with friends, and kids and eking out those few minutes to sew whenever I could.

Hoping you have a great holiday weekend, share it with family, friends, rest and be happy

I've got my issue of Flea Market Style. Even though it is a bit pricey, it's the only magazine I read cover to cover! Love your quilt. Hope you start quilting again.

Just beautiful. I recently searched town over looking for just the right quilted comforter for my bed and was surprised to find one at one of the Walmarts. Some of them do have prettier stuff for your home than other ones.

Margo, I didn't know you were once a quilter! I have a lot of respect for quilters. They have such patience. Beautiful quilts that you should be proud of.

I've got my issue of Flea Market Style magazine and I love it. The price is well worth it. One of the few magazines out there that isn't filled with ads every other page. Lots of good content, pictures and ideas. Love it!!
