Organizing a Memory Closet

If you follow my blog and Facebook then you know I am doing a whole house purge this year.
This past weekend I tackled my keepsake / memory closet.

Below is a before shot.  This closet had accumulated a  number of things in the past 10 years. Luggage, keepsakes, random clothing etc. And although  my photos are already somewhat organized in scrapbooks (not shown). The extras and duplicates are in these labeled shoe sized boxes from the craft store, So I had a head start.

What I needed to do was organize the last 10 years of photos and memorabilia that had just been thrown in this closet to (get to some day).
That someday was now

And below we have the After.
The first thing I did was to designate this a Memory closet only. So the luggage went down the hall to another more appropriate closet.

I hung my wedding dress, and a few other pieces of important clothing in this closet. That is the only clothing in here.

I realized that I could fit more of the shoe boxes on the second shelf than the top shelf due to the slope of the roof so I moved them.

My kids memory boxes were reduced and divide by items that had to be stored inside, and items that could be moved to the attic. In other words, no photos in the attic.

Some good products to help you get organized.

Lidded storage boxes (on floor) are an inexpensive staple for me. I use them at work, at home, in the garage, and barn etc.  But remember to label them or you will not know what is inside.

One of  the favorite organizing tools that I found were these storage boxes from Michael's.
I found them in the scrap-booking storage isle at 50% off. $15 for 4 boxes.

I like these for several reasons.
 They are clear,
they will hold notebooks and newspapers where the shoe box sized boxes will not.

They have a build in handle,
 and they stack very nicely.

This one houses a scrapbook I made years ago and loose photos of our former home remodeling adventures.

These are a few other products I picked up that I really like.

The zipper envelopes, In 2 sizes are perfect to separate items in a larger file storage box, and you can see what is inside, get to it easily and mark it with a sharpie. (hint Sharpie writing can be removed with Alcohol, so if you need to change the label it's easy)

The expandable folders are a bit less wonderful but are also less expensive and are perfect for certificates, documents, clippings etc.

The zip folders expand and will lay flat inside a shoe box and are nice for bulkier items, like disks and cassette tapes.

I had a lot of fun going through these old keepsakes, and getting them organized.  I found an old audio tape my dad made of an interview and listened to the whole thing while I sorted. It was all very technical stuff, but is one of the only recordings I have of my Dad's voice.
I will definitely store it indoors.

I hope this will encourage you to get into that Memory stash you've been accumulating and get it sorted out. You'll be glad you did and you'll find lots of fun stuff.

Ode To Color....

It seems like every year at this time, the "color" gene gets turned on in my mind and I get on the search for brightly colored happy items to use and display.

Thanks to everyone who helped me identify the bag in the post below that I'm loving, but it is a bit too pricey for my frugal nature. I think Robelyn may have a solution for me, we'll see. In the mean time, here is some affordable color I've brought into my house this Spring.

Into the cupboard went most of my black and white items from my winter hutch display and out came the color.
Dishes above are from a retired Rosanna Inc Collection

Love these re-purposed soda glasses I got from Bachman's and behind them are retro dot glasses from Target

Gotta have a little junk so,vintage soda bottles fit the bill with their colorful retro graphics

Fun color for working, Pencils and glasses from Michael's. Glasses are only 2.50ea and I need a pair everywhere.

Love this bag I picked up at a garage sale yesterday, Perfect for keeping my booth price marking stuff in

Love these fun oilcloth bags from Michael's only 2.00 ea

Outside there is no shortage of color, a vintage croquet set waits patiently for players.

Choleus ready to be planted. Perfect color for a shady area.

And this colorful display purchased as you see it from the nursery this morning.

Hope you have a little color in your world as we go from Winter to Spring.
Blessings,
Margo

Play on Words

I walked out into my garage to continue pricing the other day and saw this.

The sun was shining through one of my mirrors and onto the large chicken feeder behind. I made this mirror with the verse reference from Proverbs "her children rise up and call her blessed".

I am truly Blessed
Have a great weekend

More fun with Photo's and Junk of course, and some News

The cool candles in the pic above can be purchased from Gloria at Sweet Peas

The centerpiece above uses an old farm disk at the base, with some old books, zinc seed pots, plant markers and a dried hydrangea

Several of you have asked what kind of camera I'm playing with. It's a Cannon Rebel XS 35mm with a flash attachment. Speedlight 430ES II. It's the camera my Son the photographer suggested my Husband get for better pics. I'm slowly learning about f-stops, shutter speed, angle of flash, automatic and non automatic settings etc. It's a lot to take in, and I have a new appreciation for good photographers.

For every good photo I show you there are 20-30 not so good ones.
And I do use Photoshop to do some color and light manipulation.

Big News-for me at least.
I'm going to Round Top/Warrenton
Got me a place to stay today!!!!! Not an easy task.
Not going to sell, but to shop, scout and photograph.
Can't wait to take you along.
Look for reports later this month.

Beautiful Vignettes

Yesterday I headed out to Winnie & Tulula's to work on my booth space. While I was there I used the wonderful displays to play with my new camera. I took well over 200 pics and I was very pleased with how well some of them turned out. Here's just a small sampling.

Can't help but get great pics when the Vignettes are so wonderful

Gloria and several other dealers are busy getting ready for Warrenton & Round Top later this month.

Sweet Peas is now selling a full line of Lollia products

Lilly is making these fun shadow boxes
