Junk Bonanza 2009 Part 2-Load in Day

Wednesday was Vendor load in day

Irene was set up outside with vendor packets, and lists, badges, tshirts and instructions. I was all set up to help her when the call came from the Junk Revolution Store that they needed help folding t-shirts

Ki with her Daughter Tayor and her sister Karla, discussing the set up of the store
I took a break from folding shirts to make these chandeliers. These are wonderful, they are 2 rings with holes in them that you can hang anything you want from, to make your own custom chandelier. This one uses cut up license plates.

Mostly I folded shirts all day. If you bought a tshirt there, then I probably folded it. As I was folding, I got to watch all the dealers load in their stuff. it was amazing to watch it rise from nothing to the beautiful set up that you saw when you came in on Thursday.

Look at all those goodies.

The pic abovwe and below are from Jane of Mustard Moon's space.
Jane is one of Ki's helpers, and such a sweet person too.

Lots of lovelies.

Later in the day some celebrities arrived.
Seen along with Heather Bullard are (Left to Right)Nancy Soriano, former editor of Country Living , Jo Packham of Where Women Create and Serena of The Farm Chicks.

Now here's a tip ladies. RENT A CAR, then everyone will NEED you to drive them around. I was so happy to be able to visit with these ladies as we traveled to and from the hotel, and to have their "Junk in my Trunk".
Later that night I got to finally meet Linda MacDonald of Restyled Home. I'll have some pictures of her and some other fun stuff tomorrow.

I know many of you are anxious to see what I bought, So here's a peak at my trunk after day 2 of shopping

You might be able to make out a few goodies in that jumble. And that even includes a stop at some Garage Sales with the Red Shed Girls.

Junk Bonanza 2009 Part 1-Behind the Scenes

I arrived in MN for the Bonanza on Tuesday, The Junk Bonanza does not start till Thursday so I had already made arrangements with Ki to help out for the set up. I went to the facility at Canterbury Downs, first thing to check it all out. As I walk in, I see my roommate for the show Heather Bullard. I recognized her immediately and we said our hello's, with the usual hugs all around. After checking out the facility, I began to look for where I might be needed.
Things were already humming, and Ki was busy as usual.

Ki has a great team and above you see Irene and Kathy stuffing early bird gift bags. Sorry if I misspell names, please forgive me.

Matthew Mead even got in on the preparations by putting burlap bags over all the chair backs. That is Susan, Irene's sister in the background.

We stuffed over 200 gift bags with lots of great goodies.

In another part of the facility, Ki and her Sister Karla were getting the Revolution store ready.

Karla does all of the sewing for the great bags that Ki sells on her Junk Revolution site. She made all of these cart liners for the sale, and most of them were sold. Aren't they beautiful, I love the fabrics.

This is the Junk Corral staging area, it was beautiful when it was done, there was a lot of great stuff there. all with a western theme.

More Corral staging

Ki gets down and dirty setting up for the event. If you don't have a trash can handy, just stick the tape to your jeans, and keep going.

This is a funny sign I had to take a pic of. Everyone in MN says UBETCHA! It's one word. And they say I talk funny :)

I managed to tag along with Matthew Mead, his wife Jenny, and Heather for dinner. I learned lots about the magazine business. They are all really nice folks. and I'm glad they let me tag along. The magazine is going to be great by-the-way, I heard lots of great tid-bits that I cannot share. you'll just have to wait for it.

I've got over 300 pictures and lots more to share. This is just day 1 and I was there for 7 days.
I won't bore you with the trials and tribulations of traveling, except to say that my flight that was supposed to get me home at 9 last night, was canceled at midnight. I was in airports all day yesterday, and finally had to call a friend to rescue me and let me stay the night at her place. I rented a car and drove home this morning. It was all worth it as you'll see in the posts that follow.
Stay tuned!

Be sure and visit the sites I've highlighted in my post, for more great photo's and Bonanza Stories.

boy!!! am I tired

Last day at in MN and I've been all over the area, finding lots of small pieces. It has been so hard, because there have been so many wonderful larger pieces here for great prices. But I'm very pleased with what I've gotten. Can't remember most of it. I've filled 2 large boxes, and will be taking them to ship tomorrow. Then I fly out at 4 and should be home by 9pm.

I'll begin updating with great pictures as soon as I can. I've got to play catch-up at work on Tuesday though.

It's been an amazing trip, I've met some amazing people and I can't wait to share it all with you.

Junk Around the House-Guest Room-Junk Revisited

Some of you have seen this room before. It is my Junked up guest room. When my oldest son moved out, I waisted no time turning his room into my dream junk guest room.
The room has 2 windows and I covered each one with a topper using an old burlap coffee bag, cut in half, and hung by old hinges,
That big thing between the windows is 1/4 of a windmill I purchased in April
The cabinet below is really cool when you open the doors, it is full of little cubbies. I added the feet. I found the rocker at a Garage Sale for $5. The metal candlelier was an item I traded another dealer for. It's a fun piece. And an old shopping cart as a hamper. Wooden gears and a valve handle accessorize the top of the cabinet.

I've had the dresser below for at least 2 years, holding it for this room. I paid $5 for it, and painted it white and then distressed it. The mirror above it I've had for at least 5 years. Framed this-n-that on either side.

The red vanity had no top or front or mirror, I paid $10 for it, I used a piece of masonite, cut to size and decopaged old dictionary pages to it for the top and front piece. The mirror is off of an old medicine cabinet, and I screwed it onto the old mirror frame. Old Corbels (traded with a dealer) hang on either side of the large topographical survey map of Louisiana. The map is a way to cover a huge area of wall, easily. The wall needs some repair from Son #1's hanging of shelves. An ol dressform sports a vintage lace jacket and strands of pearls

Above the bed are parts from old fans. The cabinet on the left is a medical cabinet of some sort. The table on the right was a transmission stand from an old car shop. I attached an old marble top to it and now it's an industrial side table. I made the catch-all on the right from an old ammo box lid, and various hardware, and on the left is an old chippy door, complete with hinges, and knob. The lamps are re-purposed trouble lights. I know I still need a headboard but that will have to wait for now.

I've made some changes since the pic above was taken. I turned an old piece of a piano into a headboard, and changed out the chippy door for an old gate piece.
Making it easy to change what I hang from the old gate without having to put new holes in the wall.

I had so much fun making this room complete from re-purposed items. Even the lamps are re-purposed. I continue to have fun changing and updating it. It's a great backdrop for my junk experiments.
There are lots of little details in this room, so look around the pictures and see what you can find.

Junk Around the House-Master Bedroom

Today I am scheduled to help with move in day at the Bonanza. I'm supposed to be helping dealers get registered and get their packets, find their spots etc. Hope to see you there. I'll continue with my Junky house tour, in the Bedroom.
I have definitely surrounded myself with junk in my bedroom.

I've never had built-ins before. But the Master of this house had one. We have lots of book, but I didn't want to just fill it with books alone. So the books keep company with some specially chosen junk and old pieces.

The lamp beside my side was made from 4 spindles. This was one of
Ki Nassauer's past projects.

Under our window I have a table I made from an old cabinet door. with various
junky bits on top and underneath.

My DH made me this faux fireplace. To make the "hole" look real, I used felt, which reflects no light, and adds to the illusion that it is real. I've actually had people say "Oh you've got a fireplace in your bedroom". I place an old rusty heater in the space where the hole should be.
The mantle display is always a work in progress and change. currently I'm using empty frames, and an old gear here. Don't blink, it will change again.

Junk Around the House-Bathroom & Hallway

Today I fly out for the Junk bonanza in Minnesota. I will not have computer access while I'm there, so you'll have to wait until next week for pictures. I'm sure it will be great fun, and I'll have lots of stories to tell when I get back. I've scheduled several entries to post automatically while I'm gone. After all I don't want you all to feel ignored. Here is the first and part of my continuing tour of junk in my home.

If you do a 180 degree turn from the Cottage Corner you see this wall. This is my brag wall where I have many family pictures. I've made 2 shelves out of old ceiling crown molding to add dimension to the display.

Then you proceed into the master bathroom. This is something I made to hang my earrings on. It's simply lace attached to the backs of 2 old frames. The fishook earrings just slip right into the holes in the lace.

And old chippy door, complete with great old hinges, and a glass knob hangs on the wall just above my tub.

We are real proud of this bathroom remodel and did most of the work ourselves. I set the tile floors and the granite tile counter tops myself. The only things we contracted out were the plumbing, and the tape & bed work for the sheetrock. We also had the cabinets ordered and installed but I painted them. We saved a lot of money by doing the work ourselves and you can view the whole process
here.

The Hardships of Out-of-town-trips

It seems that strange things always go wrong when either my DH is out of town or I am preparing to go out of town. This past week, we have both. DH was in CA and I'm preparing for the Bonanza in MN: The adventures go like this.

I was driving back from Winnie & Tulula's with the trailer, and I had a blow out on one of the trailer tires. Keep in mind Roger is in CA and I have no spare, I am 5 miles from the nearest town (which is very very small), I got out looked at the tire, summed up my options and decided to drive very slowly to the nearest town.

On the way I call Roger to tell him what I'm doing. When I end the call, i go to flip close my phone, and it falls apart. So now not only am I having car trouble, but I have no phone.

I drove 20 mph for about 20 mins , flashers on. Praying the whole way that there would be someone there to help me, and that it would be obvious to me where to go, and that they would stay open (it was almost 5pm) .

When I finally get near the little town, Just as I start seeing some businesses, i see this building with no sign, but lots of tires stacked up outside. Of course I pull right in, and these 2 great guys outfit me with a new/used tire to get me home.
It was amazing, it was like a big flashing billboard saying, turn here, see these guys, they will help.

I Call DH from the repair shop to update him on my progress, when the guys are done I head home without further incident.

I spent Thursday evening getting a new phone, which is still confusing me and I keep refusing calls that I mean to pick up.

Friday I had to have my Air conditioner upstairs worked on

Then I had a trouble light show up in my car. I have a slow leak in a back tire. I have to keep filling it with air and Sunday morning it was as flat as a pancake. Did you know that the tire places are mostly closed on Sunday, Well they are!
I will be leaving this problem for DH to fix while I'm out of town.

Sunday morning, before discovering my very flat tire, DH calls me from CA at 7:30 am. He is at the San Jose airport and has lost his wallet. Now when ones wallet is discovered missing, ones brain goes into fast thinking mode. Do I try to find it or do I start figuring out how to cancel all my cards? How do I cancel my cards without information about the cards, which is in the wallet? But the first order of business was to get through airport security without a Drivers License!!

Apparently they have a procedure for this and he calls me again from the terminal. While I was waiting for him to call me and tell me if he could get on the flight, I'm calling the Hotel, Rental car and restaurant he at ate last night.
Did you realize that lots of places are closed at 7:30 central time on Sunday Morning??? Well they are! Especially if they are on the West Coast. Did you realize that ones brain does not work so well at 7:30 Sunday morning before having one's caffeine. I made lots of notes that I cannot decipher now.Of course all cards have been canceled. And he thinks he knows which place it's at, so we are just waiting for them to OPEN.

Just got a call from DH he is at airport #1 waiting for connecting flight which will get him home at 4:00 today. He has $1.01 in his pocket, and cannot find anything to eat for less than $1.75. Needless to say he is hungry.

Update, He is home more than a hour later than expected, but he's home. On the way to pick him up at the local airport, I got a low tire light on HIS car now. What a mess, and these are not old cars, they are new and are supposed to be in good condition so we don't have to deal with this kind of stuff.
Wallet Update: Found, Yeah!!!!

So to sum it up since Thursday
Blow out on Trailer
Cel Phone breaks
AC goes out in house
Slow leak in tire (s)
Lost wallet in California

Lessons learned
Prayer works!
Get Cel phones upgraded more than once every 5 years
Don't wait till Sunday to get tires fixed
Keep a few of bucks in your shoes at all times :)

I need a VACATION!!!

Some Photo's of today's sale at Our Little Corner

Someone decided to turn the camera on ME.

I want to take a moment to thank Sheri and Bill for doing this for us.
They don't have to, but they truly desire all of us to succeed in our business at OLC. They got the tents at their expense, placed the ads at their expense. Put extra effort into cleaning, and other preparation at their expense. They didn't have to do any of it, but I want them to know, that we as dealers, truly appreciate their efforts and interest in our little businesses, under their roof.

Thanks to everyone who came out on this rainy day, and we hope you found something wonderful.

Junk Around the House-Cottage Corner

Although my house is not decorated cottage, I do like the look. I decided to take a dormer area in the upstairs hallway and make it my" cottage corner".

On the wall I hung an old window turned into a display shelf

The table is a $4 garage sale find. I painted it and then inserted a piece of old ceiling tin into it. On the window I've hung an old stained glass window.

That is my little Cottage Corner
