Last Week's Finds and a busy September to come

Last Week I played hookie from work and headed out to First Monday Flea Market. The weather was nice for Texas in August thanks to the hurricane. We are inland far enough that we just get some wind and occasionally some rain, when the hurricanes hit the coast.

There was no shortage of vendors or junk this month. I knew I had to go now because at the end of Sept, I'm having Surgery (nothing major) but I'll be unable to do this kind of junking for at least 6 weeks.

This was my favorite find. Always a sucker for some good rusty junk. This dealer wanted to get rid of these, and so I snagged them all.

And what a fabulous mirror and frame. The mirror broke just after this photo was taken, Expletives were uttered, But oh well. I'll paint the frame and sell it without the fabulous mirror. Someday I'll learn to be more careful.

The Bonanza is next week, I can hardly believe it's already here, September has sneaked up on me.

Next week is the Junk Bonanza, then Round Top/Warrenton and then the Medical stuff (yuck)

This weekends finds and a sneak peak at my barn

Pickins have been very slim around here. I only managed a small haul this weekend.

Below is my funkiest find. Love this old metal mushroom table.
And I see these all the time. Ugly crafts from the 70's, but I loved the colors in this safety pin basket.And every-so-often I give a sneak peak of my barn, so here you go... Organized chaos. There is method to my madness. Remember this is storage not display. But there are some goodies in there.

My Latest Obsession Catherineholm

I was going along just fine, until one day my son said to me "have you heard of Cathrineholm?" That was all it took, and a photo of the design, to make me fall in love. The way these pieces compliment my love of Orla Kiely was a bonus.

Here's a little history from WikiPedia and another site

Grete Prytz Kittelsen (born Margrethe Adelgunde Prytz) (28 June 1917, Oslo - 25 September 2010, Oslo), was a Norwegiangoldsmith, enamel artist, and designer. She is one of the most well-known Norwegians in the Scandinavian Design movement,^[1] and has been referred to as the "Queen of Scandinavian Design"

As one of the leading artists of the Scandinavian Design movement, Kittelsen received several awards and honors in the 1950s, including the Lunning Prize in 1952, and the 1954 Grand Prix at the Triennale in Milan for her enamel collection. From 1954 to 57 she participated in the "Design in Scandinavia" exhibition, shown in several places in the United States and Canada.^[2] Near the end of the 50s, her products, manufactured by Hadeland Glassverk and Cathrineholm, were commonly found in Norwegian homes

About Cathrineholm from this site

Above is the Cathrineholm factory, which is no longer in existence.
Contrary to what many people believe, Cathrineholm isn’t the name of a person; it’s the name of a factory located outside of Halden in Norway. The Cathrineholm factory began production in 1907 as an ironworks manufacturer and made wrought iron products and agricultural equipment. For a period, they also manufactured signs for advertising and general household items made of enamel on steel. Due to changing economic circumstances, the Cathrineholm factory later evolved into producing enameled kitchenware.
Although Grete Prytz Kittelsen is probably the best known contract designer that worked in association with the Cathrineholm factory, she was only one of many. As a collector, this is important to note as Grete’s work with Cathrineholm is typically much more sought after than the work of other contract designers. Grete’s work with Cathrineholm began in 1955 and continued until the exit of her friend, Gunnar Klein, in 1972 due to financial difficulties.
Since 1975, no new pieces have been created under the Cathrineholm or Standex brands. And this makes us want to die inside a little bit.

Many lives of a table

Once upon a time I found a great oak library table for a song. I mean a "song". I could not pass it up. You can read about how it sat in our barn and we tried and tried to strip it and refinish it here.

So eventually it became my kitchen table. Then I got new chairs, Which would not fit underneath it because of it's skirting. So now I've ordered a new kitchen table, but what to do with this fabulous library table? I've considered selling it, and may someday, but for now it's my new...work desk in my home office.
It's a great place to spread out and get work done. But of course I had to junk (dress) it up.

A little shopping in my own barn got me this great organizer. It's been in my etsy store for a year, I guess nobody else could see it's potential.

Now It's my desk organizer and It's perfect for this because when I need to spread out and work on mailing magazines, I can just lift the handle and move it away. I'm always working at the kitchen table anyway. Now IT IS my work table. :)

Friendly Faces from Flea Market Style

You may think, that being on the team of FMS, gets me sneak peaks, but that is not always the case. And even when I do, they are rough versions of what you see, often without the words or finishing touches you'll find in the magazine. So......

I was so excited to receive my copy of FMS and finally have some time to sit down and enjoy it. I immediately Recognized Beth from the Blog Patina White starting on page 47.

And was so excited to see this old key sign, that she purchased from my etsy store, on page 55. It's so fun to see an item I've enjoyed in it's new home. And what a great use for it as a window topper in her white shabby office.

Then there was another blog I love to read on page 76 Lara from Piewacket and her fabulous mid- century modern, quirky and colorful California Apartment. Inside scoop, I'm the one who mentioned this blogger to Ki. Although she had already been considered before, she was in the middle of a move and it was put on the back burner. I mentioned her to Ki and brought her back into the forefront. Always glad to be a help:)Ki surprised several of us by including our pinterest pages in the pinterest info article.

Oh there I am, It's always nice to be included. My roll is fairly behind the scenes so being able to actually contribute is a nice bonus. Be sure to pick up a copy, it's a true treasure, and as I always say. They get better each time.

Flea Market Style Winter 2012 has arrived

The UPS man brought me a great surprise today. Boxes and Boxes of the new FMS. I'm busy busy stuffing envelopes to get them out to all who have ordered (I haven't even had time to truly look at my own copy yet). Flea Market Style issue Designations aka Nobody's perfect

Recently the publisher of Flea Market Style, graciously re-printed the Spring 2012 issue. We are always happy when they do that. It was an exact re-print, everything the same, Cover, content everything... But when I received my second shipment I noticed one little change. Just above the bar code, down near the bottom, it says "Fall". After a few inquiries I found out this is to designate to the merchandisers to display this issue through the Summer into Fall.
OK I thought "no big deal".

So for several months I've been dealing with the issue of people buying this issue thinking it is THE Fall issue. And now when I mail my Spring issue orders, I'm getting emails of people thinking this is the Fall issue, and wondering where their copy of the Spring issue is.

Skip forward to now...

To differentiate the actual Fall issue , the publisher has had to designate it as "Winter".

So to clear things up.
The Spring issue says Fall, and the Fall issue says Winter.... Clear as Mud???
The publisher has promised to make it less confusing next year. We don't change covers like many magazines, so remember the cover when you are looking for the newest issue.

Be sure to look for the Cow on the cover to be sure you are getting the newest issue.

I hope to get my order this week. Fingers crossed!!!!!!

Orla Kiely at Target and some Orla look alikes

This morning I headed out to my local target to find some of the limited edition Method/Orla soap product bottles. I found 2 of the available designs, but that is not all I found.

The kleenex boxes and travel packes just called to me. And then a browse through housewares yielded this fabulous print with a definite Orla Inspired design. I just kept throwing stuff in my cart with Mr R reminding me that "I have my own money" the whole way. HaHa his way of saying "spend your own money". Below is info on the Method/Orla Collaboration.

Behind the scenes of mailing out hundreds of Flea Market Style Magazines

I am so glad that I can offer my readers Flea Market Style magazine by mail. I know how frustrating it is to check store after store to find them sold out. After many years of mailing, I think I've finally got a smooth system worked out. The goal is to get to them out to you in the shortest possible time and in excellent condition, I really want my customers to have them before they hit the stores.

To that end, I do a lot of prep work.

First thing is supplies, I need enough envelopes and postage for what I've already sold.

Then there is addressing, stamping etc. I've realized there is a lot I can do ahead of time, even before I actually have the magazines in my hand. So for the past couple of weeks I've been trying to keep up as the orders come in. This requires sorting, addressing stamping etc. Remember, I'm getting orders for the Last Spring issue as well and some folks ordering more than one, and there are the international orders as well. Gotta keep all that strait so folks get the right thing.

So while I wait for my magazine order to arrive. Be assured that I've been hard at work, so that all I have to do when they get here. Is stuff them, seal them, and drop them in the mail box. Hopefully they will arrive at your location without delay. But remember I don't have them just yet... fingers tapping on table waiting patiently.

For those tempted to tell me I can ship via paypal first class with tracking...Nope I can't, tried it and the Post office screamed at me See this post.

My Fabulous Husband and My great Birthday Gift

Awhile back I found this great old bakelite radio for $8, A bargain working or not. Loved the Art Deco graphics and lines. I had all intentions of selling it as - is. Then I made a comment "wouldn't it be nice if I could plug my ipod into this.

Well Voila, Mr Roboto did it for me.

No easy task apparently. I'd see parts laying around here and there, as he worked out the details over the past month, and act like I didn't know what was up.

He was up late last night working on it, and managed to get it done in time. And I'm so enjoying my new music coming from this fabulous old piece. And I appreciate the work that went into it. I think next year he'd just like me to want something out of a catalog.
